docs.sun.com Icons, Controls, and Indicators

This chapter describes the following types of symbols that help you navigate the docs.sun.com web site:

  • Icons - Represent a book type, collection, or file

  • Controls - Enable you to expand, collapse, or go to information

  • Indicators - Point to where you are in the hierarchy of a book or collection, or indicate the relevance of search results in the table of contents

The following table describes these symbols.

Represents a collection of books.

Shows an icon that represents a PDF document file

Icon

Represents a PDF document that you can download and print.

Shows an icon of a plus sign (+) that you can click to reveal more content for one item

Control

Clicking this symbol expands the associated entry to reveal subentries in the hierarchical structure you are viewing.

Shows an icon of a negative sign (-) that you can click to conceal displayed content for one item

Control

Clicking this symbol collapses the associated entry to conceal subentries in the hierarchical structure you are viewing.

Shows an icon of two plus signs (+) that you can click to reveal more content for all listed items

Control

Clicking this symbol fully expands the table of contents for a book.

Shows an icon of two negative signs (-) that you can click to conceal the content of all listed items

Control

Clicking this symbol collapses the table of contents to show only the highest levels of a book's hierarchy.

Shows an icon of a plus sign (+) and some books that you can click to display the books in a collection

Control

Clicking this symbol expands a book collection to reveal the book titles within the collection.

Shows an icon of a negative sign (-) and some books that you can click to conceal the books in a collection

Control

Clicking this symbol collapses a book collection to conceal the book titles within the collection.

Shows an icon of an encircled greater than symbol (>) that you can click to display the page that an index entry references

Control

Clicking this symbol displays the page associated with an index entry and brings you to the approximate location of the indexed topic.

Shows an icon of an arrow pointing towards the right that indicates an item of interest in a list

Indicator

This arrow points to where you are in the hierarchy of a book or collection when you are browsing the docs.sun.com site.

Indicator

XML books and some HTML books only: Upon clicking a search result, you are taken directly to the relevant information within the book. If you subsequently navigate to the book's table of contents, these symbols appear, indicating the relevance of the book elements to your search criteria. The solid red dot indicates the most relevant book elements.
