Chapter 7 Setting Up Printers, Faxes, and Fonts for StarOffice in
Solaris and in Linux
This chapter describes how to use the spadmin command to
set up printers, faxes, and fonts in UNIX.
Using the spadmin Command to Set Up Printers
for StarOffice
StarOffice only offers direct support for PostScriptTM printers
in Solaris. StarOffice automatically provides a printer that uses the default driver
for each system queue. You can use the spadmin command to add additional
printers.
Note –
If your Linux operating system uses a printing system such as the Common
UNIX Printing System (CUPS), use that system instead of the spadmin command
to set up your printer.
To Add a Printer
Before You Begin
-
Install the PostScript Printer Definition file (PPD) for your printer.
You can find PPD files on the following web page:
http://www.adobe.com/products/printerdrivers/
-
If you want to use a non-PostScript printer, you must configure your
operating system to translate PostScript into a language that the printer can understand.
One solution is to use Ghostscript, A PostScript conversion software. You can download
Ghostscript from the following web page:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/
Steps
-
As root, run the spadmin command.
<StarOffice installation>/program/spadmin
The Printer Administration dialog box opens.

driver.

Note –
If the printer uses non-standard PostScript fonts, you must copy the Adobe
Font Metrics files (AFM) for the fonts into the <StarOffice installation>/share/psprint/fontmetric directory. You can download the
AFM files for several fonts from the following web site:
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/type/win/all/afmfiles/
