Chapter 1 Installing StarOffice 8
This chapter describes how to install and to remove the StarOffice 8 office
productivity suite on Windows, Solaris, and Linux.

Caution –
Before you install StarOffice, ensure that you read the Readme
file in the directory that contains the installation files. The Readme file contains
important information that is not included in this guide.
If you are a system administrator, you can refer to the StarOffice 8 Administration
Guide for more detailed information about the tools that you can use to
deploy StarOffice on a network.
Note –
The StarOffice setup program also installs the Adabas D database,
and a Java runtime system. If you do not want to install Adabas D or Java runtime
system, choose a custom installation in the setup dialog.
Installing StarOffice 8 on Windows
The following sections describe how to install, repair, update, or remove StarOffice 8 from
a computer that uses the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Installing StarOffice on Windows
You can install StarOffice from a CD or from a downloaded installation
set.
To Install StarOffice 8 on Windows
Before You Begin
You need administrator rights to install StarOffice 8 on Windows.
Steps

Locate the directory that contains the StarOffice 8 installation files.

Double-click the Setup application.

Follow the installation instructions.
The setup application
might ask you if you want to install for multiple users or for a single user. If you
choose to install for multiple users, then every user gets the icons to start StarOffice 8.
Commands and icons to start Writer, Calc, Impress, and Draw are added
to the Windows Start menu.
Repairing, Modifying, or Removing a StarOffice Installation
on Windows
You can use the StarOffice installation program to perform the following
actions. To perform these actions, you need administrator rights.

Repair - restores file associations and installs missing files.

Modify - adds or removes files, filters, or modules.

Remove - removes StarOffice 8 from your computer. Your documents
are not removed.
To Repair, Modify, or Remove StarOffice on Windows
Note –
The following steps describe how to access the StarOffice installation
dialog on Windows XP. On other Windows systems, the procedure might vary.
Before You Begin
Exit all StarOffice programs, including the Quickstarter on the Windows
task bar.
Steps

In Windows, click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then double-click
Add or Remove Programs.

In the list of programs, click StarOffice 8.

To repair or modify StarOffice, click Change.

To remove StarOffice, click Remove.
Installing StarOffice 8 on Linux or Solaris Operating Systems
The following section describes how to install or remove StarOffice 8 on a
computer running a Linux or Solaris operating system.

To Install StarOffice 8 on Linux or Solaris
Steps
-
Open a shell or terminal window.

Enable graphics display for the superuser.
As a normal user,
enter the following command:
xhost +
-
Become superuser.
Enter su - to become
superuser.

Set the DISPLAY variable to point to your machine.
Enter the
following command:
export DISPLAY=your_machine_name:0.0
or enter the equivalent commands for your shell environment.

Change to the directory that contains the StarOffice 8 installation program.

Start the setup script.
Enter the following command:
./setup
-
Follow the instructions.
To Remove StarOffice 8 on Linux or Solaris
Steps

Open a shell or terminal window.

Enable graphics display for the superuser.
