Setting Up a Modem on Your System
- A modem is a device that enables your system to transmit and receive information over telephone lines. You can set up a modem on your system easily using the graphical Administration Tool. Here are the steps:

Connect the modem.
You generally perform the following tasks to connect a modem to your system:

- Physically connect the modem to the system, or install it (if you have a modem card).
- Set the any required switches and/or configure baud rate, port, and other settings on the modem.
- Plug the modem or its adapter into a power outlet, if required.
- Consult the modem vendor's documentation and the installation documentation for your system for information you may need to perform these tasks.

Become root.
Unless you are a member of the special UNIX sysadmin group (GID 14), you must become root on your system in order to use the Administration Tool. Root is a system user with special permission to modify system files. Use the su command to become root:

$ su
Password: (enter the root password here)

- If the root account is password protected, you'll need to know the root password. If not, you can simply press Return at the Password prompt. If you do not know the root password for your system, contact a system administrator at your site for help.

Start Administration Tool.
Type:

- The graphical Administration Tool will appear after a few seconds.

Choose the Serial Port Manager.
To start Serial Port Manager, click on the Serial Port Manager icon in the Administration Tool window. This opens a new window with controls and choices for managing modems and terminals.

Follow the instructions in online help.
Serial Port Manager online Help provides step-by-step instructions on how to use the Serial port Manager to install a modem. To see the Help instructions, choose Help... from the Serial Port Manager window.

Setting Up a Printer For Use On Your System
- The easiest way to set up a printer is by using the graphical Administration Tool. The following instructions explain how to set up a local printer for use on your individual system. For guidelines and instructions on network printing setup, see the Peripherals Administration manual, which is part of the Solaris 2.4 System Administrator AnswerBook.
- Here are the steps for setting up a local printer:

Connect the printer.
You generally perform the following tasks to connect a printer to your system:

- Physically connect the printer to the system
- Set the any required switches and/or configure baud rate, port, and other settings on the printer.
- Plug the printer into a power outlet.
- You can connect the printer to the system and turn the power on before or after using the Administration Tool to add it. See the printer vendor's manual and your system's installation manual for information about switch settings and cabling requirements. You usually connect printer cables to a serial port, but in some cases, depending on the requirements of the printer involved, you can use a parallel port.
